WTU Elections Committee Elections Memo - Wednesday, May 28th, 2025

WTU Elections Committee Elections Memo

Dear WTU Members,

The Elections Committee wanted to provide some campaign updates to all members so that everyone is of one accord moving forward.

1. It was brought to the Elections Committee’s attention by the DC Board of Ethics and Government Accountability, that according to the Hatch Act, there should be no “political activity” while government workers are on duty. To ensure that no members are violating the DC Code of Ethics, the Elections Committee has revised the Campaign Rules. Previously, candidates could campaign if they were on their own personal time. However, this rule did not consider that members would not be on their own personal time but on government time as they would be on duty. As a result, moving forward, as of May 27, 2025, there should be no campaigning during the hours of 8:00 and 3:30pm. Dropping off campaign materials for building reps during your lunch period is still acceptable.

2. Per the DCPS Student and Staff Technology and Network Acceptable Use Policy, “DCPS reserves the right to access, review, copy, store, or delete any files stored on DCPS technology or in DCPS network accounts; and all communication using the DCPS network. Electronic messages and files stored on DCPS computers or transmitted using DCPS systems may be treated like any other school property.” “DCPS also uses a safety management system to analyze and review content found in online student file storage, inbound and outbound DCPS email, DCPS email attachments, and links to websites.” “Users shall not use the DCPS network or DCPS technology, including access to the internet, intranet, collaboration tools, bulk communication tools, social media, or email to use, record, share, upload, post, mail, display, store, or otherwise transmit in any manner, any content, communication or information that, among other unacceptable uses:

#23. Promotes or participates in any way in internal political or election activities related to a union or other organization representing employees”

We have made it clear that there should be no campaigning to the work email address of members. We have approved an initial email to a member requesting their personal email address with an explicit script that includes no campaigning of any kind.

3. Building Representatives: please check your email addresses for correspondence from election candidates. Candidates have indicated that they are having trouble with connecting with Building Representatives to set up meetings with members. As a reminder, the election is considered union business and as building reps, you must engage in your elected duty to ensure members are aware of all union related business regardless of personal views. If you have any questions about your obligations regarding electoral candidates, feel free to reach out to the WTU EC.

4. If you did not receive a ballot in your inbox or your spam, and you have a personal email address on file with WTU, please reach out to the YesElections by emailing help+wtu@yeselections.com. If you do not have a personal email address on file with WTU, please reach out to Donita Jackson, Membership Coordinator at djackson@wtulocal6.net so she can ensure you receive a ballot.

Thank you all for taking the time to review this correspondence. If you have any questions, you may email the WTU Elections Committee at wtu[email protected].

In Unity,

WTU Elections Committee

AM BREW - May 19th, 2025

President's Message

Dear WTU Family,

I want to begin by thanking everyone who joined us for our 2025 Shared Vision Conference last week. Your presence and passion for literacy continues to inspire all of us as we work together to shape a brighter future for public education in D.C.

Friday’s kickoff event at @busboysandpoets was electric. A special thank you to Kimball Elementary School, Takoma Park Elementary School, Whittier Elementary School, and Ward 4 SBOE representative T. Michelle Colson for helping us launch the weekend with energy and joy. Our students were thrilled to meet and speak with NYT bestselling author and illustrator Brian Pinkney, whose work continues to light imaginations on fire.  Our young learners also had lunch with their classmates, and everyone took home a Brian Pickney book.

On Saturday morning, we continued the conference with a virtual conversation live from Brian’s art studio in New York, followed by a powerful session on how parents can support literacy at home. Later, the D.C. State Board of Education Representatives joined our conference and highlighted their commitment to improving literacy outcomes. We thank SBOE members Jacque Patterson, LaJoy Johnson-Law, Robert Henderson, T. Michelle Colson and Eboni-Rose Thompsonfor participating in our Shared Vision Conference and for their continued support—especially around initiatives in early literacy funding.

The WTU is proud to invite all WTU members to participate in the World Pride Parade and Festival on Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, June 8th. Please use this link to sign up! All participants will receive a free WTU 2025 World Pride T-shirt!

Thank you for all you do. I’m incredibly proud of what we continue to achieve together, and I look forward to marching forward—literally and figuratively—with all of you.

In solidarity,
Jacqueline Pogue Lyons
President, Washington Teachers’ Union

AM BREW_ MAY 12th 2025

Dear WTU Family,

To all our incredible mothers and educators — I hope your Mother’s Day was filled with joy, rest, and love. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the Teacher Appreciation Party on May 7! Celebrating your dedication and passion was truly inspiring, and your presence lit up the evening. If you haven’t already, I invite you to take a moment to relive the fun in the photos below and watch my message from the evening here.

Looking ahead, I hope to see many of you at our upcoming Shared Vision event featuring the acclaimed author and illustrator Brian Pinkney. We’ll gather in person on May 16th and virtually on May 17th to reflect and dream together about the future of public education in D.C. Don’t miss this inspiring opportunity to connect with colleagues and elevate our shared voice. Please register HEREto join us.

I also want to speak from the heart about something incredibly important: your right to vote in the upcoming WTU elections. In previous election cycles, fewer than 1,000 of our members participated. This means less than one in six members decided who would lead our union. These numbers are published in the Washington Post and followed closely by all city leaders—and frankly, it's disheartening to see such low participation from a union as vibrant and vital as ours. The process is simple—you don’t even need to leave your home. Voting is fully electronic, and your vote demonstrates the power of our Union.

Lastly, as the school year winds down, please know our kids are just as excited as you are about the warm and sunny days which can make them more active than usual. This time of year, we see an uptick on accidents and younger children escaping school campus grounds.  Please keep an extra eye on everyone and reach out to us if we can help to support you in keeping everyone safe. With appreciation for all you do.

In solidarity,
Jacqueline Pogue Lyons
President, Washington Teachers’ Union

As A Reminder

As a reminder, the WTU is urging all members to follow the OAG Guidance on Immigration Enforcement for DC Schools. The guidance is available in English, Spanish, French, Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese.

Additionally, we strongly recommend our members read and familiarize yourself with the FAQ document prepared by WTU’s attorneys to advise WTU members on the legal protections and risks for teachers in the area of immigration. The FAQ is available by clicking here. We would like to particularly emphasize:

Question # 3. What should Teachers do if they encounter ICE agents at school?

• Direct all ICE requests for entry or any other inquiries to the Principal, who should contact the DCPS Office of General Counsel.

• Do not consent to letting ICE agents into non-public school areas. Tell ICE agents that you are not authorized to let them into non-public school areas, state that DC policy requires law enforcement to have a warrant, and direct them to the Principal, who should contact DCPS Office of Legal Counsel. Do not try to determine for yourself whether ICE is legally permitted to enter non-public areas.

• If you are asked directly by ICE agents about your knowledge of a student’s immigration status, respond that DCPS policy is not to inquire into the immigration status of students and report the inquiry to the Principal.

• If you are asked for any records relating to a student, cite FERPA (the law that protects the confidentiality of student educational records) and direct the request to the Principal, who should contact DCPS’s Office of Legal Counsel.

AFT has a compilation of resources for educators related to immigration. If you would like to access these resources, you may do so by clicking here. Lastly, if you would like to view the ACLU of DC Empowering Educators: Know Your Rights Webinar for Educators of Immigrant Students Webinar, you may do so by clicking here.

AM BREW_ April 28th, 2025

Dear WTU Family,

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful weekend filled with sunshine and warmer temperatures! As we move into another busy week, I wanted to take a moment to share some updates and invite you to a few important upcoming events.

This past Saturday, the WTU had the honor of attending the 46th Annual Evening with Laborcelebration hosted by the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO. It was truly inspiring to stand alongside so many dedicated union leaders and advocates who are fighting every day for the rights of working people across our region. I was humbled to receive the JC Turner Award for Outstanding Trade Unionist of the Year. This recognition is a testament to the incredible work we are all doing together as a union. Our strength comes from the collective efforts of every one of our members, and I am proud to continue standing with you in solidarity.

Looking ahead, I encourage all of you to join us at the Labor Solidarity Rally on May 1st, also known as May Day, at 5:00 p.m. at Freedom Plaza (1325 Pennsylvania Avenue NW). Let’s come together in support of workers’ rights and public education. If you plan to attend, please wear your red WTU t-shirt and let our WTU Organizer, Mike Roland, know at [email protected]. Please note that because of the rally, the monthly WTU Building Representative meeting previously scheduled for May 1st has been canceled.

Also, don't forget to register for our 2025 WTU Teacher Appreciation Event, happening on Wednesday, May 7th, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Sports and Social DC (1314 U St. NW, Washington, DC 20009). This special evening is our chance to celebrate you—our incredible educators—and all that you do. Advance registration is required, so please be sure to sign up!

Thank you for all you do each day. Wishing you a productive week ahead, full of growth, joy, and learning for your students.

In Solidarity,
Jacqueline Pogue Lyons
President, Washington Teachers’ Union
