The educators in DC public schools formed the Washington Teachers’ Union (WTU) because they realized that by working together collectively and speaking with one voice, their voice would be much stronger than each teacher talking for themselves alone.

Each and every member has a say in every step of the process of negotiating contracts with DCPS. When finally approved by members, the contract lays out clearly the rights, privileges and responsibilities of both educators and administrators and guides their day-to-day work.

As stated in the preamble of the contract covering 2016 to 2019, “The WTU and DCPS mutually agree to use this Agreement as a powerful vehicle to achieve the overarching goal of increased student achievement for all children in the school system.”
