WTU Members at DCPS Schools – Ideas and Actions to support our students return to school during a Federal Occupation 

Reach out to President Laura Fuchs to be put in contact with those who are doing this at their schools. 

Reminder: We are under intense surveillance and under the current Federal Administration we don’t want to take unnecessary risk that something is used against you. Communicate primarily with those you trust and limit information to need-to-know. Use resources that will encrypt your data to maintain your privacy. 

• Geographic/Ward Based Signal Chat – WTU can help put you in touch with Building Reps to set up a Signal Chat with a point person from each school to share what is going on. 

• Rapid Response in Your School – Identify who is interested in ensuring that all DC Protocols are followed. If law enforcement attempts to enter the school have a person monitor to ensure that the Principal is informed, a judicial warrant is provided, DCPS General Counsel is contacted and that team is aware of what is happening. 

• Training – Share Know Your Rights Information with students. Practice scenarios and how to enact your rights.  

• Community Based Safe Passage – Identify key corridors students travel to/from school and any potential increased law enforcement presence. Recruit educator and parent volunteers to go to those locations and help escort, deescalate and be a comforting presence to students on their way to school. Knock on neighbors doors and ask them to be present on their porch/sidewalks to say hi and welcome students on their way to school.
