Happy Pride Month! As we celebrate the brilliance and resilience of our LGBTQ+ students, educators, and families, we’re reminded that creating safe, affirming schools is inseparable from the choices we make as voters and as a union.
We are now entering the final two weeks of the school year, and it also happens to be the final two weeks before the DC Democratic Primaries and Special Election — one of the most consequential voting moments for public education in our city. With a new Mayor preparing to appoint the next DCPS Chancellor, the outcomes of this election will directly influence our working conditions, our students’ learning environments, and the future of our school system.
If you want to support leaders who stand with educators, here's who you should vote for:
- Janeese Lewis George for Mayor
- Aparna Raj (Ward 1)
- Matt Frumin (Ward 3)
- Zachary Parker (Ward 5)
- Charles Allen (Ward 6)
- Oye Owolewa #1 and Dyana Forester #2 for At‑Large (D)
- Elissa Silverman for At‑Large (I)
- Brian Schwalb for Attorney General
- Robert White for Congressional Delegate
At the same time, our union’s upcoming Building Elections and our final Membership Meeting give educators the opportunity to ensure that WTU remains a powerful advocate for fairness, stability, and strong public schools.
This moment calls for more than showing up at the ballot box. Every day between now and Election Day, WTU members and volunteers are calling fellow educators to talk about our endorsed candidates and you can join from anywhere. If you’d like to plug in, email President Fuchs and she’ll send you the link to join the virtual phone bank. Even a short shift helps us reach more members and build momentum.
As we head into these final two weeks of school, let’s move forward with pride, purpose, and the full strength of our collective voice.

The WTU is here to support you in conducting your Building Elections. We’ve created a dedicated Elections Page with all the resources you need, and you can always reach out to your WTU Organizer for questions or support. For SY26‑27, we have budgeted and are planning to reimburse dues for WTU Building Reps who meet the required criteria, so please review the details on the Elections Page.
