The Union Update

Now that we are back in the classrooms, we are reminded that every moment in our classrooms is an act of service—and every action we take as a union is an act of power.

This September marks the 53rd anniversary of the first labor action taken by WTU Local 6 on September 19, 1972. That strike was a bold stand for respect, fair treatment, and the right to shape the future of public education. It was a moment that changed the course of our profession—and it was led by educators who understood that progress requires action.

Today, we carry that legacy forward. The challenges we face are different, but the need to act is just as urgent. Whether it’s voting in upcoming elections, advocating for stronger protections, or organizing within our schools, our collective voice is our greatest strength.

Time’s Running Out. Donate To The Leave Banks:
We’ve reached just 18% of our total leave bank donation goal—and we need your help to close the gap. These banks provide critical support for DCPS educators during medical emergencies, maternity leave, and family care. Donate your hours in PeopleSoft by September 30 to ensure your colleagues have the time and dignity they deserve.

Union Strong, Teacher Proud: Sign the Petition For International Educators

International teachers are essential members of our union and school communities, yet many face immigration hurdles that threaten their ability to stay and teach. By signing this petition, you're standing in solidarity with colleagues who deserve stability, dignity, and a clear path to permanent residency. Let’s show the power of collective action—because when we fight for one, we fight for all.

Bylaw Updates Explained - Do you want to know how your Member Dues are spent?

The WTU Executive Board's proposal to pass bylaws amendments failed to meet the 2/3 threshold for passage by 1%.

Proposed Change 1: Increase the Power of the WTU Executive Board over finances, staffing and legal decisions.

The current bylaws allow the WTU President to spend the vast majority of member money without any say by anyone else and little to no required transparency. This is out of step with the rest of the AFT. We are proposing to use the language provided by our parent union, the American Federation of Teachers, to give the WTU Executive Board greater authority over how money is spent. This will make all spending subject to votes, greater transparency and greater member control. Read more here: Link

Laura Fuchs: "I served on the WTU Finance Committee for 9 years before becoming President, and was almost never provided any evidence, documentation or receipts for spending. I also rarely was able to vote for how money was spent beforehand. I would find out about spending 2 months after it happened and only in the broadest of terms. We need to make sure that our due diligence happens before spending is done."

Thank you for your continued dedication to our students, our schools, and our union. Let’s stay informed and united — because together, we’re stronger.

In solidarity,
