The Union Update

As we continue to advocate for equity, respect, and support for all educators, this week’s update is packed with opportunities to make your voice heard and strengthen our union community. From free registration to the CBCF Annual Legislative Conference to an urgent petition supporting international educators, now is the time to get involved. Plus, don’t miss key deadlines for WTU leave bank donations, professional development, and contract enforcement updates that directly impact your rights.

Take Action

The time to donate is now

We still have a ways to go! Remember that even if you signed up using another method in the past, everyone must sign up again to the WTU Sick and Parental Leave Banks in PeopleSoft before the September 30 deadline. These banks provide critical support to members facing medical emergencies or parental leave without enough accrued time. Act now—your donation could make all the difference for a colleague in need.

Support International Educators: Sign the Petition

In light of the highly concerning executive orders on H1B's it is even more important that we show our International Educators support. WTU is demanding that DCPS reinstate its Green Card Policy, a critical support system that once helped international educators secure permanent residency. These educators are beloved members of our school communities and without a pathway they will be forced to return to their home countries in just a few short years. We’re pushing to reach 1,000 signatures and we need your help to get there.

What's New

Apply to Lead or Create a WTU Committee or Task Force

The WTU is committed to being a member led organization. Committees are key to making that work by bringing members together to take action. If you are interested in chairing (or co-chairing) a pre-authorized committee or creating a new one check out the linked applications. If you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out to WTU President Laura Fuchs. We will provide trainings and support to all those interested in taking on a leadership role in the WTU.

AFT Covers Registration for CBCF ALC 2025

The American Federation of Teachers is covering registration costs for WTU members to attend the 54th Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference, September 24–28 in Washington, DC. Bylaws Explained

Proposed Update 2: Move the WTU Budget Approval Process to occur before money starts getting spent

The current bylaws have the budget getting approved in September, the problem is that money is already being spent that budget cycle starting in July. We are proposing a simple change to move the approval to the June Membership meeting, which would then have the WTU Representative Assembly approve the budget in May, giving significant time to have a voice in the process before money starts getting spent.  Read more about the proposed changes here.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our students, our schools, and our union. Let’s stay informed and united — because together, we’re stronger.

In solidarity,

Washington Teachers’ Union
