October is Membership Month at the Washington Teachers’ Union – a time to celebrate our collective power and deepen our engagement as union members.
This month, we’re encouraging every member to take the next step by joining one of our WTU Committees. Whether you're passionate about professional learning, political action, community outreach, or contract enforcement, there’s a committee where your voice and leadership are needed.
Why join a committee?
- Help shape the union’s direction and priorities.
- Collaborate with fellow educators across the District.
- Build leadership skills and make a lasting impact.
In addition, this week is the final opportunity to enroll in the WTU Sick Leave and Maternity Leave Banks for the 2025–2026 school year. These leave banks provide critical support for members facing unexpected medical or family needs. If you haven’t joined yet, don’t wait – the deadline is fast approaching!
From DCPS: if you received a $1,500 payment on October 2, DCPS leadership stated it was the Key Duty stipend for WTU members serving as Special Education Designees, LEA Representatives, and Case Managers—contact DCPS Compensation with any questions.

Want to shape the future of D.C. public schools? From special education to political advocacy, WTU committees are where passionate educators come together to lead change.
|
Thanks to 1,713 generous donors, we've reached 65% of our Sick Leave Bank goal—16,277 hours strong! But we still need 7,000 more hours to fully support expecting parents—watch the step-by-step video to learn how you can join the bank by October 7 and make a lasting impact.
